We are answering questions as they come in. If you have a question that is not answered here, please send us an email.
Q: Why is the price point below $200?
A: The price point is because the priorit is retail sales. We are a small space, and like to have as many artists as we can fit
Q: How come the works have to be so small?
A: The Gallery is in the Departure Lounge. Visitors have already checked their bags, they have limited room to take items on board. The goal is to have artists who have work at the airport to also have their Bios highlighted there, and personal websites on the SWAC website's Airport Artist page.
Q: Is this only for First Nation artists?
A: This project involves both aboriginal and non aboriginal artists. Our goal is to foster and represent the artists across the YLW catchment area equally, and to support creative commerce for all.
Q: What if I have a beautifully carved wooden knife? Is that accepted?
A: Look at this list and see if your item is permitted.
Q: All my works are really big and/or too expensive for the price point and/or the size restrictions. How can I participate? I'm automatically cut out!
A: You could consider creating what we call "potstickers". These are small portable artworks that are specifically created to bring attention to your larger works. For example, paintings 8"x10" and for sculptures 12" high.
Q: Who’s really benefiting from this?
A: In any project, it is hoped that all partners benefit. SWAC is the organizer/coordinator of this project and it takes time and administration costs to run this project. It is reasonable to expect that those who want to participate pay the SWAC Membership fee, and if accepted, the $10 fee. Skyway Ventures is a commercial business just like any other. They require 25% commission from any works sold. That is very reasonable. The artist receives placement in the YLW departure lounge, after security. This is a captive audience with people looking for something to do.
Q: Who came up with these requirements?
A. The requirements were worked out between Skyway Ventures Inc owners/operators David Mah and Edward Wong, and SWAC. We are thrilled for this opportunity to have artwork from the YLW catchment area artists included at the YLW departure lounge.
Q: Can my artwork be shrink wrapped instead of framed?
A. Yes. Backing must be strong, such as coroplast. Professional plastic type bags required, no ziplocks. On your artwork list document indicate how you would display these, i.e. the container they would be in and the size (ie wicker basket 4" high by 8" wide by 6" long). It would be your obligation and cost to purchase this container but don't purchase anything until you are accepted.
